First Nations Artist
Ron Jackson
Mr. Jackson was born October 23,1971 to Robert and Gail Jackson of Prince Rupert, British Columbia. He is the third of six children.
Creativity is common to his family. His father, Robert, is an accomplished artist who works mainly in wood. His tools are ancient, having been passed down to him from a great-uncle, Arthur McDames who in his time, was also recognized as a leading artist.
During his formative years Ron learned about, and assimilated much of the art form through his close association with his Father. He was always fascinated by the mystery and power of the Tsimshian legends about which his father frequently spoke. It is form this rich cultural heritage that his work evolves.
Upon graduation from Hazelton Senior Secondary School Ron went to work at a local saw mill. He married Mara in 1995. They have two daughters, Grace and Hayla. Long hours of shift work at the mill made his home life unappealing.
In 1994 he decided to pursue his dream of becoming a full time carver. To further his career he recognized the need to attain a higher level of craftsmanship.
In 1995 he enrolled in an intensive jewellery fabrication and repair course at Vancouver Community College. His professional career began upon his graduation with distinction.
Ron’s work is of impeccable quality. His clear depictions, in metal, of creatures common to his heritage, are marvelous examples of contemporary art. Deep pride in his Tsimshian traditions is evident in each of his pieces.
This talented artist has earned his considerable reputation as a respected member of the North West Coast art community. He is certain to take the art forward to heights of excellence which have yet to be discovered.
